NJ Helps: Public Benefits Eligibility Screener & Application

  • Click "Get Started!" under the Screen heading to complete a brief eligibility screening. The screening will check your eligibility for NJFamilyCare/Medicaid, SNAP (food assistance), and WorkFirst New Jersey (WFNJ) Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) and General Assistance (GA). At the conclusion of the screening, you can complete an application for these programs by clicking the "Get Started!" button under each program title. You can also complete an application by clicking "Get Started!" under the "Apply" button instead. This will direct you to a page where you can also apply for each program by clicking the "Get Started!" button under each program title.

New Jersey Department of Human Services: Supportive Assistance to Individuals and Families (SAIF)

  • Individuals and families on WFNJ welfare who have reached the five-year time limit and do not qualify for an exemption
  • An additional safety net for individuals and families who have reached the five-year time limit for Work First New Jersey welfare and do not qualify for an exemption. Provides intensive case management alongside benefits, such as cash payments, childcare, and transportation for up to 24 months
  • Contact your County Welfare Office (or County Board of Social Services) or your Municipal Welfare Office to obtain an application. Complete and return to the same location.   • HOPES offers a benefits enrollment center that provides one-on-one benefits counseling and application assistance with SNAP, prescription assistance, LIHEAP, SafeLink phone service, and other utilities.

North Hudson Community Action Corporation

  • PRAB offers services in English and Spanish. They connect households with utilities assistance, home weatherization, and homelessness prevention resources. They offer early childhood care, after school programs, and youth mentoring. They assist households in accessing healthcare, public benefits, legal assistance, wage recovery, and public benefits, and they provide a food pantry. They also provide individuals and families with support on immigration issues.

Bergen County: HEARTS Program

  • The HEARTS program includes a coordinated intake for families experiencing homelessness, which connects them to public benefits, food assistance, childcare support, and legal support. The program also includes temporary emergency shelter for families who are experiencing homelessness or about to lose their housing. For families receiving TANF, the HEARTS program also offers BRIDGE temporary housing for a maximum of one-year. This housing includes case managment and the development of a housing permanency plan. Participants are required to contribute 30% of their income to rent.
