How do I get a COVID-19 vaccine or a booster shot?

Last Updated: 04/04/2022

Note: Everyone ages 12 and older should get a booster shot at any vaccination location -- as long as it has been at least 5 months after your second Pfizer or Moderna shot, or 2 months after your one dose Johnson & Johnson shot.

Second Pfizer and Moderna booster doses are available for many people who received their first booster at least 4 months ago. Those eligible include: 1) Everyone ages 50 and older 2) Everyone ages 18 and older who got a primary J&J shot and J&J booster shot 3) People ages 12 and older who have moderate to severe immunocompromise. Everyone 5 years or older is eligible for a COVID-19 vaccine in New Jersey and encouraged to get vaccinated as soon as possible.

There are multiple ways to get a COVID-19 vaccine including:

  1. Use the NJ Vaccine Appointment Finder to find available vaccination appointments near you or sites with walk-in vaccinations (no appointment needed).
  2. Attend a pop-up or mobile vaccination event in your community
  3. Register with the NJ Vaccine Scheduling System to be notified when an appointment is available to you at vaccination locations that use the State's Vaccine Scheduling System.
  4. Seniors 65+ can call the senior-specific hotline at 855-429-1168 from 8am to 8pm to schedule dedicated vaccine appointments
  5. Many VA facilities and clinics are offering vaccines to veterans, their spouses, and their caregivers. Learn more here.

Note: Please verify requirements with a vaccination site before visiting or making an appointment. Some require proof of residency within a specific county or municipality. In addition, 5 to 17-year-olds must have the consent of a parent or legal guardian to be vaccinated, and can only receive the Pfizer vaccine at this time under the FDA's Emergency Use Authorization.

NJ TRANSIT's VAXRIDE initiative is offering free rides to and from vaccination sites. For more information on the program and public transit options near vaccination locations, visit NJ TRANSIT's VAXRIDE initiative page.

In addition, NJ 211 is offering free rides to and from vaccination sites in partnership with United Way Worldwide and Lyft. Rides are available wherever Lyft operates in New Jersey and is available to everyone including those with collapsible wheelchairs and walkers. To request a free ride, call 211 or text 898-211, or visit 211 to learn more.

Direct Appointments at Designated Sites

Use the NJ Vaccine Appointment Finder to find vaccination locations near you with available appointments.

This tool aggregates information across multiple scheduling platforms, multiple times an hour, letting you know where appointments are open and how you can schedule one

Note: If you make your first dose appointment by booking directly with a vaccine clinic, you should schedule a second dose appointment when you have your first appointment for the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine. Residents can get their second dose at any vaccination location and do not need to return to the site where they received their first dose. Johnson & Johnson's Janssen vaccine only requires a single dose.

NJ Vaccine Scheduling System

All New Jerseyans can schedule an appointment for the vaccine on the NJ Vaccine Scheduling System.

You will be notified when an appointment is available to you through the scheduling system.

Note: If you make your first dose appointment through the New Jersey Vaccine Scheduling System, you will receive an automatically scheduled second dose appointment and you will be emailed a confirmation with the details of your second dose appointment for the Pfizer and Moderna vaccine. Johnson & Johnson's Janssen vaccine only requires a single dose.
