Are courts open? Do I have to report for jury duty? Can legal matters be dealt with remotely?

Last Updated: 02/14/2023

Federal Courts

Criminal as well as civil jury selections and trials have resumed.

Judicial proceedings, in both criminal and civil matters, shall continue to be conducted by video and teleconference whenever possible with certain exceptions until further Order of the Court. Each Judge may use his/her discretion in determining if an in-person proceeding is necessary.

The Court follows the CDC Community Level Status designations. When surrounding counties are HIGH, visitors will be required to wear a mask to enter court facilities and in all public areas.

For the courts' current masking policy, visit www.njd.uscourts.gov/

State and Local Courts

All State courthouses are open to the public.

Face masks are optional in courtrooms and jury assembly areas.

If you need help, call the NJ Court's Help Desk line at 609-421-6100. In addition, the Court's ombudsmen can answer questions by phone and email.

Some municipal courts have reumed in-person operations. Contact the municipal court for details on hours and operating procedures.

Jury Duty

All jurors will first report online by video for orientation. Jurors will be able to raise any general Covid-19 concerns before reporting in person.

The Judiciary does not ask jurors about their vaccination status.

If you feel sick, do not report to the courthouse. Instead, contact your local jury management office to reschedule your service.

For more information about jury service, refer to the NJ Courts' jury information page or contact your jury management office.
