How are suspected COVID-19 cases confirmed?
People suspected of being infected by the COVID-19 virus will have respiratory samples (i.e. mucus) taken by healthcare professionals that will then be analyzed by public health labs, hospital labs, or commercial labs like LabCorp or Quest. Healthcare professionals will work with public health departments and the CDC to determine who needs to be tested. The CDC advises that people who feel sick with fever or cough or have difficulty breathing, and who have been in close contact with a person known to have COVID-19, live in a community where COVID-19 is spreading, or have recently traveled from areas where COVID-19 has spread, should call their healthcare provider for further guidance.
